Dental implants are becoming increasingly popular among people with missing teeth. Dental implants are replacement tooth roots, providing a solid, stable foundation for fixed or removable teeth, made to match your natural teeth. These are made to fuse with bone, becoming permanent. Implants, by far, are the most natural way to replace missing teeth and achieve the support needed for any cosmetic dental work.
The first step in the dental implant process is the development of a personalized treatment plan. This plan addresses the patient’s specific needs, developing an appropriate plan of action. Next, a small titanium post, the tooth root implant, is placed into the bone socket of the missing tooth. As the jawbone heals, it grows around the implanted post, securing it to the jaw. This can take anywhere from six to twelve weeks.
Once the implant has secured itself to the jawbone, a small connector post is attached to hold the new tooth in place. To make new teeth, we will make impressions and create a mold of your bite. We use this model to build new teeth. A replacement tooth is then attached to the connector post. We can then match the color, size, and shape of your implant to the rest of your teeth.
There is very little discomfort involved in this procedure. Local anesthesia is often used. After the implant is secured, mild soreness may be treated with over-the-counter pain medications. Dental implants require the same care as real teeth.
Implants can also be used to secure dentures in place. This can be done in various ways depending on a patient's desires. Each option has its own advantage and can make eating enjoyable again as the dentures are stable and chewing is efficient. If desired, the dentures can be secured in place and only removed for a yearly check by the dentist. Patients easily clean around them like they would their own teeth. For patients whose natural teeth have been determined to require removal, in many instances, the teeth can be removed and implant supported dentures placed in the same day.
