Porcelain Crowns

Dental porcelain crowns are tooth-shaped caps placed over a prepared tooth, restoring its shape, size, and strength. With porcelain crowns, patients no longer have to settle with the unsightly black line or graying of the gum tissue, often caused by metal crowns.

Benefits of Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain avoids the use of corrosive non-precious metals of a traditional crown. However, if your particular situation requires the use of a metal base for your porcelain crown, know that we use only the highest quality precious metals when making your crown.

Porcelain also provides a more natural color match than any other crown alternative. These crowns can be used for back and/or front teeth. Crowned teeth do not require any special care other than your typical good hygiene practices.

Crowns are integral in the restoration of teeth. They restore the health and function of damaged teeth. Dental crowns are designed to fit over the entire tooth, thereby protecting them from further wear and tear or tooth decay. In addition, this dental treatment provides weak teeth with additional strength. The most commonly cited benefit of completing a dental crown procedure is that it can help restore the life of the natural tooth, allowing patients to maintain their own healthy smile and save money on costly replacements.

In addition to potentially saving natural teeth, using a dental crown can improve chewing ability, protect against breakdown due to erosion, support weakened structures in the mouth caused by large fillings or a decayed tooth, provide an aesthetically pleasing uniform shape to damaged teeth and help repair any cosmetic discoloration.

Our Porcelain Process

At the first dental visit, we will examine your teeth and take a few X-rays in preparation for a permanent crown. Before the process of making a crown begins, we will numb the tooth and surrounding gums using a local anesthetic. Next, the tooth receiving the crown will be shaped, making room for the crown to be placed over top.

After the tooth structure is reshaped, we will digitally scan the tooth. Then, a temporary crown will be placed on the tooth until we receive the porcelain crown.

At a subsequent visit, we will remove the temporary crown and check the fit and color of your new porcelain crown, and the new crown will be permanently cemented in place.

At Ultimate Smile Design, we have thoroughly evaluated the same-day crown installation procedures and have found them lacking. We believe porcelain crowns are the best type of crown used for dental treatment. Please discuss this with us if you have any questions.
